# Phone numbers for AI voice agents

> Learn how Talkturo phone numbers connect your AI assistants to real phone calls — for both inbound customer calls and outbound campaigns.

Phone numbers in Talkturo are the bridge between your AI voice assistants and the real telephone network. Every call — whether a customer dials in or your assistant reaches out — flows through a number you own in your account. Without an assigned number, an assistant cannot send or receive calls.

## What a phone number does

Each number you add to Talkturo serves two purposes depending on how your assistant is configured:

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Inbound calling" icon="phone-incoming">
    A caller dials your number directly. Talkturo routes the incoming call to whichever assistant is assigned to that number. The assistant answers, introduces itself, and handles the conversation in real time.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Outbound calling" icon="phone-outgoing">
    Your assistant uses the number as its caller ID when dialing contacts in a campaign. Recipients see your number on their screen rather than an unknown or spoofed line.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

## One number, one assistant

A phone number can be assigned to exactly one assistant at a time. This is a deliberate constraint — it ensures that every call routed to a number is handled consistently by the same agent persona, prompt, and voice configuration.

If you need multiple inbound lines (for example, a support line and a sales line), purchase a separate number for each assistant.

## Number statuses

After you purchase a number, it moves through the following statuses on the **Phone Numbers** page:

| Status       | Meaning                                                                             |
| ------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| `purchasing` | The order has been placed and Talkturo is provisioning the number with the carrier. |
| `active` | The number is live and ready to assign to an assistant. |
| `suspended` | The number is temporarily inactive. Contact support if you see this unexpectedly. |
| `error` | Provisioning failed. Try purchasing again or contact support. |

<Note>
  Newly purchased numbers usually become `active` within a few seconds. If a number stays in `purchasing` for more than a couple of minutes, refresh the page.
</Note>

## Supported countries

Talkturo currently supports purchasing numbers in the following countries:

* United Arab Emirates (AE)
* United States (US)
* Canada (CA)
* Germany (DE)
* Austria (AT)
* Switzerland (CH)

More countries are added regularly. If you need a country not listed here, reach out to [support@talkturo.com](mailto:support@talkturo.com).

## Trial numbers

If your account is on the Free plan, you can purchase one trial number at no charge. Trial numbers expire **5 days** after purchase. After expiration, the number is released and you will need to purchase a new one. Upgrading to a paid plan removes the trial expiry restriction.
